Rømø is one of the Danish Wadden Islands, adjacent to the Wadden Sea, stretching from the Dutch, German to the Danish Wadden Sea. The island is connected by a causeway to the mainland. On Rømø, you will find a piece of history that has in common with all Wadden islands: seafaring, whaling and tourism. Besides, Rømø is also a favourite spot for all travellers including camping, backpacking, hiking, etc. Camping is one of the most favourite activities in Romo, so be sure to equip one from best camping tents if you go with family. Rømø Rømø is the Wadden island which is in the shape of a kidney, connected by a causeway to the mainland. The island is famous for its beautiful beach. It is a resort island where you can have an opportunity for a pleasant stay by the sea and the beach. The beaches are among the finest in Europe. They are wide and clean and without stones. The sand is in a bright color and fine structure. That's why there are so easy to drive cars and suitable for campers. National Park Rømø is part of the Danish Wadden Sea National Park and adjacent to the Wadden Sea World Heritage. The dam to Rømø was built just after the Second World War, in 1948. The dam is ten kilometers long and was built in 1938. The project took longer than planned because of World War II and completed in 1948. The beginning of the dam located on the mainland near the village of Skærbæk. Naturcenter Tønnisgård The Naturcenter Tønnisgård is opened from April to October and has many excursions. There are books Oyster Safaris and Bunker tours. The island was in the Second World War, part of the Atlantic Wall and remnants are still visible. As on many other islands, there are some bunkers excavated and opened to visitors. Kite Buggy On Sønderstrand, there is plenty of space for beach activities. Among the outdoor activities is kite buggies racing. The beach is also eminently suitable for making a ride on a horse. The Parks Labyrinth is a labyrinth playground where children can play and puzzles in a labyrinthine structure of 1200 m2. Sort Sol Rømø is renowned for the Sort Sol, the Black Sun. In the migration season, thousands of starlings in the Wadden fly to Rømø. At sunset the birds fly in great clouds through the air and then form, with its thousands of a pulsating organism that seems to move as one, but consists of all individuals. They form a kind of eclipse, black sun, Sort Sol. It is a natural phenomenon which attract many bird watchers and nature lovers. Shooting Part of Rømø is a military training ground. Normally, you are kept shooting from fighter jets. Before the start precision bombing is hoisted a black ball on the dike, so the audience knows that there will be popping. Especially for those interested, is a kind of balcony on the embankment where people made a safe distance to follow the exercises. School Toftum Toftum is a cute little school. It is the smallest and oldest in Denmark. In 1784 the residents of the villages Rømø Toftum and Juvre ridges together to establish a school. A school was built which has a classroom as well as a turf area and a hall with fireplace and stove door to fill the timber and peat stove. The master received a certain sum of money for his work. Compulsory education was at the fifth to the tenth year for boys and from 5 to 8 years for girls. This lasted until 1883, when a larger school was built. The school is still visited and is a gem of cultural and historical legacy of Rømø. Whalers Not far from the school is a fence made from jaws of whales which are available on all the Wadden islands. Islanders were whalers, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. The remains of that work are on all the Wadden islands, also the German and Dutch. Rømø belongs with Mandø and Fanø to the Danish Wadden Islands. Romo Family Camping As we have mentioned, when visiting Romo, you should have a camping vacation here. There are many sites which offer peaceful nature, rich flora birds and plants, and wonderful playgrounds.
